The Future Economic Rural Network (FERN) Research Group is pleased to announce the opening of preliminary discussions with officials from Saint John, New Brunswick, to explore potential environmental innovation opportunities in the region. Our research team has conducted extensive site assessments and feasibility studies to determine how sustainable development initiatives might benefit the local community, economy, and environment.
Initial Discussions with City Leadership
Our research team has initiated discussions with senior leadership and key stakeholders to explore how environmental regeneration can transform underutilised areas of Saint John. These preliminary conversations have focused on identifying potential sites that could support innovative ecological education, community engagement, and sustainable tourism.
Bryan Wilson, serving as the Saint John Lead for the feasibility assessment, has been instrumental in connecting our research team with local experts and community members. His knowledge of the region has provided invaluable insights into the unique characteristics and potential of various sites throughout the city.

Sustainable Infrastructure Considerations
Discussions have included exploration of renewable energy partnerships, potentially involving Saint John Energy’s Zero 30 initiative or district energy systems. These partnerships could showcase innovative approaches to sustainable operations and serve as educational components within the broader project.
We look forward to sharing more information as these discussions progress and potential projects take shape. The enthusiasm and support from Saint John’s leadership and community have been tremendously encouraging as we explore these innovative environmental opportunities together.
